Operation Fetlock saw the occupation of Funafuti Atoll (2 October 1942) in the Ellice Islands. By April 1943 it had an airbase just within range of the Gilbert Islands, but other islands in Nanomea and Nukufetu Atolls were closer, so they were occupied by Marine 7th Defense Battalion in August. Here LCT(5)-129 approaches the beach at Funafuti Atoll, transporting US Army Air Corps personnel on 11 November 1943. Note the early warning radar installations in the background.

Troops of 2/165th Infantry, 27th Division assaulted Yellow Beach Two, Butaritari, Makin Atoll, on 20 November.
